Here’s how you set the download location to an external SD card on the pre-installed browser apps on your Galaxy S5:

i. Changing the download location to an SD card on the stock Internet browser.

  1. On your Galaxy S5, find and launch the stock Internet browser.
  2. Tap > Settings > Content settings
  3. Tap Default storage, then select SD card.
  4. The downloads from the Internet browser will now be saved to the Download folder on the SD card.

ii. Changing the download location to an SD card on Chrome.

Unlike the stock Internet browser, Chrome doesn’t feature the option that lets you change the default download location. But, there’s a tedious (and imperfect) workaround.

  1. Install ES File Explorer from Google Play.
  2. With the ES File Explorer installed, you’ll now be prompted to choose a downloader when you initiate a download on Chrome.
  3. Select Internet and tap Always. Note: Choosing Always makes the stock Internet browser as the default downloader for Chrome.
  4. Now, the file will be downloaded using the stock Internet browser to the folder set in Default storage.

Note: In my testing, I only got prompted to choose a downloader when I tried downloading songs, videos and documents, but not images. In that case, the images were saved in the default Download folder on phone storage.

Note: The steps here were written for Android 4.4.2 on a Samsung Galaxy S5 (SM-G900F). If you’re having a different model of Galaxy S5 or other version of Android, there’s a possibility that the steps and screenshots will be different.

To do this, you need to start Google Chrome browser. Next, open the browser’s menu.

On a list of available options and parameters, find the “Settings” option.

Now look for the section “Downloads”.

In this section, you will see the previously mentioned path to the folder where all your downloaded files are saved. To select another folder, you must click on the “Change” button. This will open a dialog window “Browse for Folder” where you have the list of all disks and folders.

If you check the box next to “Ask where to save each file before downloading,” you will be asked every time when you try to download a file to choose a specified location for it. So you can, for example, sort music by genre or images by category.

You need to choose a new location to save the files which are ready for download. Then simply click on “OK” button.
