Download All Google Photos To Computer

Download all photos or videos. On your computer, go to drive.google.com. Click Settings Create a Google Photos folder. In My Drive, find and open the Google Photos folder. Select the folder you want to download. Click More Select All Download. Move all photos to a different Google account. Part 1: How to download iCloud photos to PC. If you don't like the relatively complex settings and steps to download iCloud photos to your PC, you can use EaseUS MobiMover Free to transfer all photos from your iPhone, no matter it's new iPhone X/iPhone 8 or earlier iPhone 7/iPhone 6.

Google Photos is free and awesome. As we’ve decided before, it’s not going to hurt you to try it out. But trying it out means uploading hundreds or thousands of your pictures to Google Photos. And because Google Photos didn’t exist till now, your photo collection is messed up. Your iPhone photos might be in iCloud Photo Library/Dropbox, DSLR photos might be in the iPhoto/Lightroom library and years old photos might be stashed in a folder somewhere.

Sadly, there’s no 1-click way to automatically upload all photos from Dropbox to Google Photos (there’s no API yet). So we’ll need to do this manually. But once it’s done, you can start to reap the many, many benefits of Google Photos.

Step Zero: Install Google Photos Backup

Pictures

First thing you need to do, even before we start gathering photos from the 63 different services you’ve signed up for, is to install Google Photos Backup. It’s just an automatic uploader app (no two-way Dropbox-like sync here) that you can assign folders to watch. Whenever new photos will show up in that folder, they’ll be automatically uploaded to Google Photos.

Download the app and sign in to your Google Account. The app will automatically select some default folders like Pictures and Desktop. You can add a new folder using the Add button.

Below, you can switch between the free unlimited storage option that uploads compressed images to 16 MP and the full-res option that’s counted against your Google Drive storage.

1. Upload/Sync Photos from Dropbox

If you’re already using Dropbox and the folder that contains all your images is already synced to your Mac/PC, half your battle is over. If that’s not the case, download and install the Dropbox app, go to Preferences and from Selective Sync, check the folders. This will first download all the images to your local storage.

Now, go to the Photos Backup app’s Preferences, click Add and navigate to that Dropbox folder to add it. Yes, the process of first downloading the images from one cloud storage and then uploading it to another cloud storage sounds counterproductive but currently that’s all we can do. And hey, once it’s done, it’s done.

Another upside is, once you have this set up, Google Photos can be a secondary place to back up images. If you have auto-upload to Dropbox enabled, which uploads all new photos to a particular folder, with Photos Backup watching that folder, you now have another copy of the photos in Google Photos. And this was without running two apps from your phone.

2. Transfer Photos from Facebook/Instagram

Facebook lets you download everything in your profile using one click. Go to Settings ->General and click Download a copy of your Facebook data. Then confirm on the next screen and type in your password. In a while, Facebook will send you a link to the zip file.

Now go to Google Photos website, locate the Facebook zip file on your PC, find all the photos in there and just drop them in the browser window.

To download all your Instagram photos, use Downgram or follow our guide here. Once they’re downloaded, upload them in the same way to the Photos website.

3. Transfer Photos from Flickr

Go to your Flickr profile, from the thumbnail view, click on the photos you want to download and click the Download button. Once they’re downloaded, drop them in the Photos website.

4. Upload/Sync iPhoto/Photos Library from Mac

If you’re a heavy iOS user, all your photos are probably in an iPhoto library (now known as the Photos app). If that’s the case, you don’t really need to do anything. Because when you install Photos Backup app, it checks the iPhoto Library option by default.

I’ve migrated my iPhoto library to the Photos app, but the upload still worked for me. But you should know that this will only work for photos you have locally stored on your Mac. This won’t work for photos that are in the iCloud Photo Library and are just syncing thumbnails to your Mac. If that’s the case, go to the Photos app, turn off Optimized Storage, download the iCloud Photo Library for offline use and then run the Google Photos Backup.

If you have photos in iCloud Drive, just select them and drag them to the Photos website. Or you can go to icloud.com and manually download photos from there as well. But it’s going to take a lot of time. Using the Photos app to do this is a much better idea.

Lightroom or any other photo management app: If you’re using Lightroom or any other pro image editing app, just point the Photos Backup app to the folder where the app saves all the photos. This way, every time you import new photos, they’ll automatically be uploaded to Google Photos. It won’t be full-res, but it’s something.

Download using Google Takeout

Using Google Takeout to download all your pictures and videos including backed up files from Android and iOS mobile uploads (Google Photos app) or from a computer.
  1. Go to https://www.google.com/settings/takeout and login using a desktop computer.
Click 'Deselect all' unless you want to download ALL data from ALL products.
  2. Scroll down to 'Google photos' and select it.
The button 'Multiple formats' gives some info about what will be downloaded.
  3. Click 'All photo albums included' to get the list of albums. All albums are selected by default.
  4. To select specific albums, click 'Deselect all' and select the albums you want to download. When you added ALL your photos to albums you can ignore the (often empty) folders with a date as title.
To find albums down the list you can use the Find function of the browser (Ctrl+F). See also Notes 2-3 below
  5. Click 'OK' to continue. That brings you back to https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout
  6. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click 'Next step'
  7. Choose how you want to get the data ('Customize format')
    1. Choose 'Delivery method' (includes Email, Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box ... ). Select an option to get more info. Note that this will create a ZIP file in all cases, but not all services can UNZIP. Search for example 'Google Drive' unzip to find how to unzip in Drive.
    2. 'Export type' (One-time or scheduled every 2 months)
    3. 'File type' - choose Zip format
    4. 'Archive size'
  8. Click 'Create archive' or 'Link account and create archive' (depends on delivery format you selected)
  9. After awhile, you'll receive an email that says 'Your Google data archive is ready'
    • for example your Zip file is ready to download. Download and unzip the file into a drive that has enough room to store it. The file size could be quite large depending on how many photos are in your collection.
    • or where it is stored, for example 'View in OneDrive'. In OneDrive or the like you will find a ZIP file with the photos/videos. To my knowledge there is no UNZIP feature in OneDrive.
Notes
  1. When a photo is edited in GP the ZIP folder includes both the original and the edited photos.
  2. In takeout you find many albums with a date as title. That is how they are stored. You may have to unpack them all and move to one folder. ExifTool is quite effective for moving photo files into new folder organization. See a step-by-step blog post by I. Gouy.
  3. Photos that are in your own albums may also be present in the dated albums. Thus when you download everything using Takeout there may be duplicates between the 'Auto Backup' albums listed by date and your own albums. Takeout works better when you add ALL photos to albums and deselect the dated albums. It may be worth to add ALL photos to (for example) year albums before you use Takeout.
  4. The ZIP folder also includes .json files with data (for example descriptions, locations) added in Google Photos. Google does not provide any tools to add them to the photos, but EXIFTool seems able to do it:

    http://u88.n24.queensu.ca/exiftool/forum/index.php?topic=8154.0
  5. Takeout does not remove photos from Google Photos.

Download using 'Google Photos' folder in Google Drive - disabled from July 2019

Remark: Starting in July 2019 this option will be disabled.
Seehttps://blog.google/products/photos/simplifying-google-photos-and-google-drive/
This folder is only present when the option 'Create a Google Photos folder' is activated in the settings of Drive.
  • Photos are sorted in year/month folders. Own-made albums must be downloaded using another method.
  • This folder is ONLY intended to show photos uploaded directly to Google Photos in Drive. You cannot use it to add folders to Google Photos
  • Photos uploaded from the computer using 'Backup & Sync' are NOT added to the 'Google Photos' folder in Drive. See a work-around below.
Downloading manually from 'Google Photos' folder in 'My Drive'.

Sync using Google Drive

How To Download All Google Photos To Computer

  • When you have activated Create a Google Photos folder in the settings of G drive you will have a 'Google Photos' folder in My Drive, with year/month folders. You can download this folder or sub-folders manually: right-mouseclick (or 3-dots) > Download.
  • This folder can be synced with the computer when you download and install the Google Drive app to the computer.
In july 2017 the Drive App has been replaced by the new 'Backup & Sync'. You can use the new app for syncing the Google Photos folder with the computer.
  • Photos uploaded from the computer using 'Backup & Sync' are NOT added to the 'Google Photos' folder.A work-around to download ALL photos from Google Photos may be :
    1. Share your library with the second account. See https://support.google.com/photos/answer/7378858
Archived photos are in account 1 are not shared.
    2. Accept the share in account 2 and select 'Automatically add to library' for all photos
    3. Wait, might be best to leave overnight, until the photos have all been added to the second account
    4. Enable 'Create a Google Photos folder in Drive' in Google Drive Settings
    5. Use Backup and Sync, Google Drive section, to Sync down to your computer.
It does not use quota in the recipient account: The help says: 'Any photos you save from a shared library won’t take up storage, unless your partner stops sharing their library with you, or deletes the original copy.'

How to determine if a photo or video is stored in Google Photos or in Google Drive

Download Video From Google Photos To Computer

  1. Go to Google Photos settings (https://photos.google.com/settings)
  2. Under 'Google Drive' select 'Show Google Drive photos & videos in your Photos library' (the selection button will turn blue when selected)
  3. Go to Google Photos (https://photos.google.com)
  4. Click into the search bar (https://photos.google.com/search)
  5. Scroll down and click the first 'Show more' then 'Google Drive' (https://photos.google.com/search/_td_)
  6. You will be shown all the photos from Google Drive which are also visible in Google Photos.
Check your Google Drive quota: https://drive.google.com/drive/quota

ZIP files

  1. After downloading a .zip file using any of the methods above, your browser prompts you to save the .zip file. You can also rename the zip at this time
  2. Click 'Save' and specify a location to download
  3. Unzip the zip file
    1. In Windows Explorer, right click the zip file, click 'Extract All' then 'Extract'
    2. When unzipping is finished, you may delete the zip file (but check before you delete)

How to preserve 'Captions' ('Descriptions' in Google Photos)

In Google Photos 'Captions' are called 'Description' and found in the Info panel (click i)

Captions added in Picasa Web Albums (PW) or Google Photos (GP) are lost when downloading from Google Photos.
Captions added before uploading are not lost, but after editing in PWA or GP you get the original caption, not the edited version.

  • When using Takeout a .json file in the downloaded zip includes the info about the missing caption, but is hard to use. I found these articles online: latest version(s) of EXIFTool seems able to do it in batch:
    https://stackoverflow.com/questions/42024255/bulk-join-json-with-jpg-from-google-takeouthttp://u88.n24.queensu.ca/exiftool/forum/index.php?topic=8154.0
  • Captions are added to the photo when you use 'Import from Google Photos' in Picasa3 (under the File menu). Note: Google disabled this option end March 2018.
